"صوفیا..."
وہ آہستہ بولیں، آواز میں نرمی تھی لیکن لہجے میں تھکن تھی، "بیٹا، بعض اوقات
سلطنتوں کی بنیادیں بیٹیوں کی قربانیوں پر رکھی جاتی ہیں۔ میں نے بھی اپنی خواہشوں
کا گلا گھونٹا تھا، تم بھی صبر کرو۔"
صوفیا
کی آنکھوں میں نمی چمکنے لگی۔ اس نے دھیرے سے ماں کی طرف دیکھا، جیسے برسوں کا درد
لبوں پر آ کر رُک گیا ہو۔
"امّی،
کیا ہم صرف مہرے ہیں؟ کیا ہماری خواہشیں، ہمارے خواب… سب کچھ اس تاج کے نیچے دفن ہونا
لازم ہے؟" اس کی آواز بھرّا گئی تھی۔
روشانہ
نے بیٹی کا چہرہ تھاما، اس کی آنکھوں میں جھانک کر کہا، "نہیں صوفیا، تم مہرہ
نہیں ہو… تم روشنی ہو، جو شاید کسی اندھیرے محل کو منور کرنے کے لیے بھیجی گئی ہو۔
بادشاہ الفغان سخت ہے، بے رحم ہے، مگر شاید تم اس کی روح میں وہ نرمی جگا دو جو برسوں
سے دفن ہے۔"
صوفیا
کی پلکوں سے آنسو لڑھک کر گالوں پر آ گرا۔ اس نے کپکپاتی آواز میں کہا، "اگر وہ
میری روح ہی کچل دے تو؟"
عالیہ
خاموش ہو گئیں، پھر دھیرے سے بیٹی کو گلے لگا لیا۔

لمحے، دوسری جانب محل کے شمالی کمرے میں، شہزادی ہیزل کھڑکی کے پاس کھڑی تھی۔ بارش
کی بوندیں شیشے سے ٹکرا رہی تھیں، اور درختوں کی شاخیں ہوا میں ہل رہی تھیں، جیسے فطرت
خود بھی صوفیا کے غم میں شریک ہو۔
