ہے اور نہ ہی ہندی کا، بلکہ یہ سنسکرت زبان کا ایک لفظ ہے جس کا مفہوم ہے: پاک اور
وفادار عورت۔ مگر وقت گزرنے کے ساتھ، یہ خوبصورت نام ایک خوفناک، انسانیت سوز رسم کی
پہچان بن گیا۔ میرا ناولٹ آپ کو اسی رسم کی ہولناکی سے روشناس کرانا چاہتا ہے، ایک
ایسی روایت جس میں بیویوں کو شوہر کی موت کے بعد زندہ جلا دیا جاتا تھا۔

سن 1825ء کے آس پاس یہ رسم اتنی عروج پر تھی کہ تاریخی ریکارڈز ہزاروں بیواؤں کو زندہ
جلانے کے واقعات بتاتے ہیں۔ اس ظلم کی وجہ سادہ مگر گھناؤنی تھی: اس زمانے میں لڑکیوں
کی شادیاں اکثر کم عمری میں، بوڑھے مردوں سے کر دی جاتی تھیں۔ جب شوہر مر جاتا، تو
وہ کم عمر لڑکی بیوہ ہو جاتی۔ اسے زندہ رہنے کا حق نہیں دیا جاتا تھا، اس خوف سے کہ
وہ کہیں بدکردار نہ نکل آئے اور دوسرے مردوں سے تعلقات نہ جوڑ لے۔
یہی
وجہ تھی: اس دور میں وہی عورت پاک اور وفادار کہلاتی تھی جو اپنے شوہر کی چتا کے ساتھ
زندہ جل جاتی، اور یوں اپنے خاندان کی "عزت" اور شوہر کی "نجات"
کی ضمانت دیتی۔ "عورت جلے گی تو وفادار کہلائی جائے گی"— یہ اس ظالمانہ معاشرے
کا واحد معیار تھا۔
مگر
وہ جو اس جبر کے خلاف آواز اٹھاتی تھیں، ان کے ساتھ کیا ہوتا تھا؟ وہ جو زندہ رہنا
چاہتی تھیں؟ یہ کہانی اسی آواز کی پہلی چنگاری اور ایک اجتماعی بیداری کے سفر کی عکاسی
کرتی ہے۔
