جانتی ہیں کہ آپ دونوں یہاں کیوں ہیں؟"
زہرہ
نے سر ہلایا۔
"جی،
سر۔"
"کہیے،"
ڈاکٹر گرانٹ نے کہا۔
زہرہ
نے نگاہیں جھکاتے ہوئے کہا،
"ہم
نے ایک مریض کو دیکھنے سے انکار کیا۔"
"آپ
چلی گئیں،" بورڈ میں سے ایک عورت بولی، جس کی لپ اسٹک تیز سرخ رنگ کی تھی۔
"ایک
نازک حالت میں آئے مریض کو چھوڑ کر آپ گھر چلی گئیں۔"
ریان
نے فوراً کہا،
"ہم
چوبیس گھنٹے سے کام پر تھے، بغیر نیند، بغیر کھانے کے۔ ہم خود مریض بننے والے تھے۔"
"آپ
ڈاکٹرز ہیں۔ آپ نے حلف لیا ہے۔"
ایک
اور رکن نے کہا۔
"ہم
انسان بھی ہیں،" زہرہ نے آہستگی سے کہا۔
پھر
ایک اور خاموشی۔
ڈاکٹر
گرانٹ نے ان دونوں کی طرف دیکھا۔
"آپ
دونوں ذہین ہیں، محنتی ہیں، لیکن یہ غلطی معمولی نہیں تھی۔"
زہرہ
نے ہولے سے سر ہلایا۔
"مریض
اب مستحکم ہے، لیکن وہ مر بھی سکتا تھا۔"
ریان
نے نیچے دیکھا۔ زہرہ نے ہونٹ کاٹ لیے۔
ڈاکٹر
گرانٹ سیدھے ہو کر بیٹھے۔
"اس
لیے آپ دونوں کے لیے ایک فیصلہ کیا گیا ہے۔"
ریان
نے سانس روک لی۔
"آپ
دونوں کو دوسری جگہ بھیجا جائے گا۔"
زہرہ
نے چونک کر پوچھا، "کہاں؟"
"ایک
شہر کے سرکاری اسپتال میں،" انہوں نے کہا۔
"جہاں
سب سے نازک، سب سے مجبور، اور قریب المرگ مریض ہوتے ہیں۔"
ریان
نے حیرانی سے کہا،
"اور
ہم وہاں کیا کریں گے؟"
ڈاکٹر
گرانٹ بولے،
"آپ
وہاں مریضوں کے آخری خطوط لکھوائیں گی۔"
